I just wanted to tell you all that “Black Bird” is now finished and realized: I didn’t introduce it in the past! That is – of course – a big no-go 😉 So here it is. The Introduction to Black Bird:
Title: Black Bird
Year of Release: 2006
Genre(s): Action, Drama, Romance, Shoujo, Supernatural, Comedy, Fantasy, Mystery and a bit School Life
Status: Complete (Read Online for Free here –> Black Bird)
“The world is full of mysterious “things,” but life keeps on going peacefully because no one can see them–except Misao. Harada Misao has the special power to see these “things,” but she doesn’t tell anybody and tries to continue leading a happy high school life. Though she’s jealous of her friends who have boyfriends, she’s just like a normal teenage girl as she keeps having dreams about a boy she met when she was younger who has the same power as she does. Her mundane life suddenly changes when goblins try to eat her, and her old friend Kyou comes back to protect her from them. Then, she finds out that she is personally being sought out as goblin food and that Kyou is a goblin, too. Will she still marry him like they promised when they were children, based on her faith in him that he has no bad intentions towards her? Will she even be safe at school now that Kyou has become her new home room teacher? Her exciting teenage life is just about to begin.” (Source Serenus-Dreamers)
I’d say that “goblin” is the wrong word. Instead Youkai or demon is definitely more accurate.
Misao is a very lively girl but also kind of a cry-baby and on some occasions can seem annoying. But her good heart and her overall cheerfulness make her a charming character. Especially at the side of Kyou who always seems a bit cold and mean but is nice at heart. The mangaka did a very good job while creating the world around Misao, Kyou and the other Tengus.
It’s also very entertaining and – as far as I can tell – has no filler chapters which makes reading it all the more entertaining. Besides that it are the ridiculous characters around the main characters that give this story a little touch of Comedy. Without these funny moments the manga may have been a bit too serious as it portrays a Romea-and-Juliet kind of love between Misao and Kyou.
Give it a try when you have time and I think it’s the most enjoyable when it’s not read in one sitting 🙂
